History

The Ashipti Project began in 2006.   It was created by four medical students from the UK after they volunteered in Tamale Hospital in Ghana. The group spent 3 months in Tamale, working for an American organisation called Unite for Sight.

During their stay, they became acutely aware of the challenges faced by the hospital. At the time it lacked even basic equipment, had no running water and an unreliable electricity supply.

On their return to the UK, they decided to raise money to improve the conditions in Tamale and registered The Ashipti Project, named after the local word for hospital (Ashipti).

The Ashipti Project has since raised over £10,000 and has sent several shipments of equipment to Ghana.  The majority of equipment has been targeted towards the eye clinic in Tamale, where the team had spent most of their time.

The Ashipti Project has recently formed a new partnership with Walewale District Hospital in Northern Ghana.  We are now working to support the development of healthcare infrastructure in Walewale.  Find out more about our work.
